After King Mosiah's four sons went off to preach to the Lamanites, he didn't have anyone to hand the crown down to. So he came up with a system of elected judges to replace the monarchy. He had to sell the idea to the people, but once they caught the vision, they loved the idea. Alma Jr., who had become the high priest over all the churches, was elected to also be the first chief judge.
