In the first year of the new government, a guy named Nehor showed up and started preaching for money. He taught a lot of things that weren't true, and he started getting a pretty good following. Then one day he got in an argument with Gideon, and Nehor got so angry with him that he killed him. Nehor was then brought before Alma, who sentenced him to death. But Nehor's followers continued practicing his teachings, and they persecuted the people who believed in Christ. But the true believers remained faithful and prospered in the land, and there was general peace among the people.
